Shadow challenge

Shadow Challenge

Let's use the sun as a helpful tool! 

There are three levels to this challenge. Try one and see what you can come up with.
*hint: it's a bit easier to trace a shadow if you are under the object and not blocking the sun

Show me what you come up with!

PK-1 Challenge

With the help of an older sibling or adult

Materials:
- paper
- pencil
- coloring tool of choice (crayons, colored pencils, etc)

Directions:
*cast the shadow of your hand on a piece of paper
*have whomever is helping you, help you trace your shadow (more than once, if you want)
*color and decorate your shadow hand any way you like (crayons, markers, etc)



2-5 Challenge

You may also want help from an adult, to hold the shape while you are tracing.

Materials:
- cardboard (a pizza disk, box or the inside of a cereal box)
- some recycled shapes to trace (container lids or metal can lids work best)
- Markers

Directions:
* hold the shape above the cardboard, to cast a shadow
* using a marker, trace the shadow of the shape MANY times, overlapping the shape as you do
* color and decorate your shadow design any way you like (markers, paint, etc)



6-8 Challenge

You may also want the help of an adult, to hold the object while you are tracing.

Materials:
- an object from your home that will cast an interesting shadow on the paper
- pencil
- paper

Directions:
* move the object around, above the paper, until you see the shape of the object clearly
* trace the shadow onto the paper
* take away the object/shadow, once you have the outline
* study the object and draw the details of the object
Options: add details with pencil shading or color it as you wish
